Potential topics for new developments

Here is a list of potential topics for new features to be developed in OnSSET, as discussed at the 7th Steering Committee in October, 2025:

  • Inclusion of mesh-grids in OnSSET: OnSSET currently includes grid, mini-grids and stand-alone technologies (primarily SHS). Mesh-grids and nano-grids are emerging technologies that may also be important to capture in least-cost electrification modelling.
  • Accounting for existing SHS: Many countries have deployed significant numbers of SHS in the last years. OnSSET is currently set up to identify where existing grid- and mini-grid connections are. However, SHS are not included in the start year (baseline) calibration. Two potential improvements could enhance the OnSSET tool, i) including identification of existing SHS deployment to assess which settlements/buildings are already electrified by SHS or ii) post-processing of the results to deduct the cost of SHS that have already been deployed.
  • Logistics and installation costing: The cost of deploying different electricity access technologies depends on accessibility, where transportation costs can significantly increase costs. Accounting for this could improve the accuracy of the least-cost model, particularly in remote rural areas.
  • Improved electrical modelling of transmission and distribution networks: Additional improvements could be made to improve the engineering detail of T&D networks. This could include things such as i) allowing multiple conductor sizes/voltage levels for MV lines, multiple distribution transformer options, etc., ii) soft-linking with load-flow analysis, etc.
  • Increasing demand levels over time: Include increasing demand levels in case the code is run in multiple time-steps

There are also non-coding developments, such as:

  • Translating the latest training material to French, Portuguese and Spanish
  • Building an open database of component costs
  • Linking OnSSET outputs to financial models
  • Improving demand estimations (residential and non-residential)
