Publication of new CLEWs Literature Review!

Hello Everyone :waving_hand:,

I am pleased to announce the publication of my first paper as lead author, in the journal Environmental Research: Climate!

The review article is titled ‘Analysing the development of the climate, land, energy, and water systems (CLEWs) modelling framework: a state-of-the-art review’. :deciduous_tree:

!!! THE PAPER CAN BE FOUND HERE :scroll: !!!

This study explores recent scientific developments in [CLEWs modelling, by systematically analysing 41 peer-reviewed studies published between 2020 and 2024. Notably, this research builds upon a previous study, Ramos (2021) which analysed the CLEWs literature from initial development of the framework, up until 2019. Significantly, this new study includes only peer-reviewed literature; so, for example, it does not include conference papers or policy briefs. This was done to highlight and assess the growing maturity of the CLEWs framework within peer-reviewed literature.

Some key statistics include:
:placard: Out of the 41 peer-reviewed studies, 29 were modelling-based and 12 were review-based.
:placard: The average of peer-reviewed papers, related to CLEWs, published per year, quadrupled in comparison to the previous study.
:placard: Out of the 29 studies that had a geographical focus, 42% were national, 28% were regional, and 10% were global, continental, or local, respectively.
:placard: Approximately 74% of studies published their data as open-access.
:placard: 50% employed an open-source analytical tool, or tools, in combination with open-access data.

In terms of research, four areas of significance were outlined:
:one: The connections between CLEWs and the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
:two: How the CLEWs framework is linked to capacity development.
:three: The critical interplay between energy and water systems.
:four: The transformative potential for comprehensive system integration using the CLEWs modelling framework.

I do not want to give too much away, as there is a lot to be said from this study, so please read the paper! I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback, as our plan is to publish this type of study more regularly.

Enjoy, Kane.
