This Special Issue focuses on recent advances in open-source energy modelling and their application to policy and planning in the Global South. It brings together contributions that demonstrate how tools such as OSeMOSYS, CLEWs Climate-, Land-, Energy-, Water-systems, MAED-Model for the Analysis of Energy Demand, and OnSSET - Open Source Spatial Electrification Tool are being used to support decision-making in contexts characterised by institutional and data constraints.
The issue covers a range of topics, including methodological developments in energy systems modelling, applied case studies, and insights from community-driven model development. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of these tools in informing energy policy formulation, regulatory design, investment prioritisation, and long-term decarbonisation pathways. By highlighting both technical innovations and practical applications, this Special Issue illustrates how open-source, policy-oriented modelling approaches are strengthening evidence-based decision-making and contributing to sustainable and inclusive energy transitions.
