Storage Level Start in OSeMOSYS

Hi OSeMOSYS team,

I’m reaching out with a question about storage.

The Storage Level Start parameter is included in MUIO and defined in the model file, but it doesn’t seem to get used in the model equations. Is that normal?

It means that the model can’t discharge battery in the first daily time bracket even if that would be optimal.

I addressed this by changing the order of the daily time brackets so that the first time bracket is one where the batteries would be charging anyway, i.e. in a system with solar, have the first daily time bracket be midday, and continue in chronological order from there. That ts change allows the model to make better use of batteries, and in the model I’m working with, leads to a 50% increase in battery use in 2050.

While this seems like a reasonable fix, would it be possible to clarify the intended situation with Storage Level Start and configuration of daily time brackets?

Best, Emma

Dear @emma.richardson, there is no reason to declare a parameter if it is not used, so this was probably forgotten due to the different iterations involving the deactivation of equations and the creation of new ones in the code.

Unfortunately, I have not been involved in the discussions about the modifications or the reasoning behind the changes. I would recommend contacting Tom Alfstad directly to ask about this logic.

However, as the literature shows, there are still several opportunities to improve the timeslicing and storage formulation in the code. You are more than welcome to incorporate the necessary changes and share them with the community.

Hi Fernando,

Thanks for the quick response! I’ll ask Tom and update this thread.
